The Computism Trap
Why an oven can never understand the 'smack' of a propane torch
In a Silicon Valley basement, the air was thick with smoke. A team of researchers and chefs were testing prototype ovens, attempting to engineer the perfect culinary experience through automation. The goal was simple: Michelin-grade meals at the touch of a button. Yet, the kitchen was chaotic. A chef had attempted to sear lamb using a technique that required the instinctual heat of a propane torch—a move the oven's logic could not interpret. To the machine, the chef's instinct was a bug, a deviation from the programmed path. This tension reveals the core conflict of modern technology: the attempt to turn subjective human sensation into objective, repeatable data.
The Death of Agency
The engineers viewed human intervention as a liability. If a user adjusted a temperature or changed a timing, they were creating 'bad habits' that threatened the machine's perceived intelligence. The mantra on the office whiteboards was 'change the ritual'. This is the essence of computism—the ideology that the universe is a series of solvable equations. By abstracting the process away, the technology promises the end result without the effort. But in doing so, it strips away the agency of the person using it. We are no longer cooks; we are merely operators of a black box.

This abstraction is what philosopher Albert Borgmann called a 'device'. A device delivers the ends while hiding the means. You get the meal, but you lose the connection to the craft. When we turn taste into data, we aren't just making cooking easier; we are making it hollow. We are attempting to count the petals of a cherry to understand its flavour, a task that is fundamentally impossible because data cannot capture the embodied experience of being alive.

As we move further into an era of automated decision-making, we must ask what we are losing in the trade. If we successfully automate every nuance of our lives, we may find ourselves living in a world that is perfectly efficient and entirely tasteless. The struggle is not between humans and machines, but between the richness of human subjectivity and the sterile certainty of the algorithm.
Data can describe a thing, but it can never experience it.
